NFL Draft - Aaron Maybin Scouting Report

NFL Draft
Analyst
Prospect: Aaron Maybin,
DE/OLB, Penn St.
Ht:
6’4 Wt: 253 40: 4.59
Strengths:
Outstanding first step; he is extremely quick right off the
football. He has good instincts, and can locate the football
really well. His play recognition is pretty good. He uses
his hand effectively to help fight off lineman and potential
blockers. He knows to keep his outside shoulder free, which shows
good technique. He has very nice pass-rushing moves, but they can
be improved. He is decent in coverage. His greatest
strength is his ability to get to the quarterback. He has a lot
of potential to be a monstrous pass-rusher in the NFL.
Weaknesses:
He needs to become more consistent against the running game. He
could add more pounds of muscle to his frame. This brings up
concerns of how much Maybin likes to be in the weight room. He
needs to control his aggressiveness. Tackling is
inconsistent. He does not have a lot of experience considering he
is coming off of his first full year as a
starter.
Summary:
Aaron Maybin has deadly pass-rushing skills that will attract a lot of
attention come draft day. However, he is a little unproven
against the run and he needs to improve his tackling. He has the
ability to either be defensive end in the 4-3 or a rush OLB in the 3-4
defensive systems, probably best in a 3-4. Maybin will also need
to be developed in order to reach his full potential. His
inability to add muscle is a big concern and teams will question his
desire to be in the weight room. NFL teams love pass-rushers, and
that’s what Maybin is; but he needs to improve on fundamentals.
He will most likely hear his name called in the top 25 on draft
day.
