Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii
by Imran Tahir, 1/26/09.  I won't go into detail about every prospect who didn't perform well, but on the whole, it seems that the player who did the most damage to his "stock" over this past week was QB Colt Brennan of Hawaii. Even more than his sub-par performance in the game itself, Brennan reportedly had a miserable week of practice, as he struggled mightily making the transition from a Shotgun formation (which he operated out of in June Jones' "Run & Shoot" offense while in college) to a classic, pro-style 3-5 step drop. There were repeated instances when coaches (in particular new 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz) made Brennan perform routine QB duties over and over again until some level of satisfaction on their part was reached, and Brennan also struggled with accuracy on his throws. Moreover, Brennan, already a rather skinny individual by nature, reportedly checked in at shocking 185 lbs. If he is to play in the NFL for some time, Brennan will need to sport a frame weighing at least 210 lbs., otherwise, the same durability issues that cropped up throughout his Senior campaign and especially in the Sugar Bowl against Georgia will continue to haunt the former Heisman Trophy finalist. As of now, Brennan stands as no better than a late-round Draft pick.

by Jared Donnelly, 12/31/07.
To me, he is the most intriguing of the group. A live arm and good decision making abilities make him very attractive, but, like Brohm, there are questions as to whether or not he is strictly a system guy.  Mobility is not his strong suit although he did demonstrate an ability to avoid a rush and step up to throw if a play takes time to develop.  A lot of people will say “yeah, he had great stats, but he threw a million times a game”.  I don’t see that as a bad thing. To me, that means that there aren’t a lot of throws that he doesn’t make comfortably.  Plus, a lot of NFL teams have had success in 3, 4, and 5 wide receiver sets.  What does worry me is that in the NFL he will have to use a tight end, which is not something he did at Hawaii.  While teams in the top 5 such as the Rams will give him a look, I think he fits into the lower third of the first round as of right now where teams like Carolina, Minnesota, Seattle, and maybe even Green Bay will strongly look at selecting Colt.

by Michael Abromowitz, 8/15/07.  My biggest fear in Colt Brennan is he is a system quarterback.  In June Jone's system, even Timmy Chang excelled.  Hawaii's pass happy system really helps inflate Brennan's stats.  The best thing for Brennan to do is face some serious competition his senior year, but that is not to be the case.  Only Boise St. brings a quality defense.  Brennan's thin frame of around 190 lbs is of question, but he should be able to bulk up.  Brennan does have a nice quick release and good size at 6-3.  I think Brennan has the skills to play in the NFL, but I don't think he is an elite franchise quarterback.  Look for Brennan to battle for the third quarterback spot after Brohm and Henne.  Is Brennan a system quarterback?  Yes, but in the correct NFL system he could still have success
