2007 Fantasy Football Comeback Players
by James (Dubz) Cross and Tim Tipton, 7/26/07

Dubz:  If I get burnt by another David Boston  *grumbles*...  I will quit this fantasy football stuff all together.  It just seems like every year I try to give that one guy one more chance to bounce back, only to get burnt again.  This year though, I think I have it figured out, maybe (I said the same thing last year with Jerry Porter - DOH!).  As far as RBs go... I'm on board with Shaun Alexander.  I know, I know... playing it safe.  I can't help it, like I said before - I have been burned so many times before that this year I am going to get it right.

Shaun Alexander missed 6 games last year while nursing a broken foot.  After posting 27 TDs in 2005, his TD total only reached 7 for 2006.  If you were like me, and chose him over LT in last years fantasy football draft... you kicked yourself in your caboose all season long.  As I watched LT rip off one of the best seasons in NFL history as a RB - my RB teased me every week, saying he was ready.  I shouldn't bring that up though.  I should forget about the fact that my number one draft pick failed to reach 1000 yards or 10 TDs for the season.  Yup, I'm leaving that alone.
This year Shaun is healthy.  Yes he is turning 30, the age where RBs are supposed to decline - but honestly... I think that is a stat of the past.  Shaun has already made claims that by season start he will be in the best shape of his life and you know what that means... that potent Seattle running game should also be in the best shape of its life (or close to it, that is a really big claim to make - strike that).

I think that Shaun could fall to 5th or 6th in some drafts... which to me is a HUGE value pick.  Even with last year's injury - Alexander is primed to make a comeback and post pre 2006 numbers.  Draft Shaun Alexander with confidence.

Tim: Yeah well, when I think of Shaun Alexander, I think of Terrell Davis. Yeah I know, but the similarities are just too "in your face" for me. I could be wrong, but I think we've seen the best from Alexander that we're ever going to see. To be quite honest, I hope I am wrong on this one, I like Alexander, his running style, and his mentality, and when that guy is healthy, he is poised to outshine even the best run defenses. I am just real weary of him, having once been burned badly by good ol' T. Davis.

I, like Dubz and most any fantasy football coach, have been burned by the likes of Boston, Moss, Brown, etc… I'd like to bring to light a different kind of "comeback" player. I'm talking about the rookie coming out of some NCAA Division I school with more hype than Mohammad Ali. Remember Ryan Leaf? What about Andre Ware? And can I get a collarbone pad for Charles Rogers??!  There are countless others I could name and throw out all kinds of stats for these guys' college years… it wouldn't matter, when it came time to play ball in the NFL – these guys were all let downs.

Another let-down for the past couple of years has been Cedric Benson. Here's a guy who sets record after record in high school, wins 3 straight state championships in Texas no less, then is named the nation's top running back in 2004 with the Doak Walker Award while at the University of Texas. He gets drafted 4th overall in the NFL draft and was expected to take Chicago to a whole new level with their running game… and then BAM! The guy immediately falls off of the common sense boat and falls on his face. When I first heard of the "hold out" – I couldn't believe it. Here's a guy with the world by the tail, poised to take over the RB position and he pulls a stunt like that?! Who holds out their rookie year? Talk about an ego! It ended up costing him the starting job; and ever since he's been playing backup to Thomas Jones. His first season with the Bears, after holding out for 36 days as a rookie (I'm still baffled by this), he injures his MCL and is out for the rest of the season. Then again the next year (2006) he hurts his shoulder in preseason (Thanks to Brian Urlacher). In Super Bowl XLI he again got injured and was unable to accomplish anything in a very meaningful game.

But this year, this year my friends is going to be the year of Benson. The Bears have released Jones, making Benson the #1 guy now. I think we are going to see astronomical numbers from Cedric; I think he's got something to prove now and I don't think he'll have a problem proving it. He has yet to prove himself, so I think he knows there's a lot on the line this season with him at the #1 spot. The Bears getting rid of Jones shows they have faith in Benson's ability and he's finally got some support from his team.

Remember that name, Cedric Benson – talk about a come back – that guy is going to the moon and back.

Dubz: Cedric Benson huh...  hmmm.  You know that guy hails from the same place as our current president right?  How could you trust him?  Only kidding.  Benson is someone that definitely has potential, I suppose you mean comeback player in the sense that he is coming back to his form in college.  So it works.  I like Benson, think he has stud-like qualities... might be a few years though.  I would draft him, if the value was right.

Let us move on to WRs though.  A few guys out there that could comeback and make owners proud to have taken the chance.  One that sticks out like a sore thumb in my eyes: Randy Moss.  I know people are going to give me the story about him giving up on plays... and not being a team player.  Save it.  I have been a Moss fan for longer than some of these new folks have been playing fantasy football, so your not converting this fat boy.

Randy Moss is a great QB & coach from being a stud again.  Low and behold... he has the two missing ingredients and the Moss stew is ready to serve.  Tom Brady has been lacking a HUGE go-to WR, some can argue Branch was that WR - but Moss at his prime would murder Branch any day of the week.  With Brady always spreading the ball around - it should be very easy for Moss to get free without the double teams that slowed him down for that past 3 or 4 years.  Moss should also be healthy again, shaking the injury bug - which should make him a top WR again.

Is Moss washed up?  Is he a thing of the past?  Sure.  Sleep on Moss, and watch as the other coaches make money off your mistake.  One thing you must realize with fantasy football... you cannot let a possible fantasy football star slip by, simply because you have a hang up with a player.  Very rare will I totally write off a player.  The only one I can say for sure I will never draft - is Michael Vick, and that is only because morally I could not stand to have him on my roster making me money.  You can't wash your hands enough to get that stink off.

Tim:     Ahh "the" Moss. Very valid points Dubz; this might be a good year for Moss. He has a much better offense and QB in the mix. As much as Brady spreads the ball out, I think Moss will, if nothing else create openings for the other WRs of New England; however, I would be willing to bet on 1 or 2 game-changing plays from Moss per game. His value is definitely up from last year, if only we can get his attitude up from the past, he could be a monster again.

My pick for the WR comeback – tough choices, but I will go with Joe Horn. This is a player who was so under-utilized in NO over the past two seasons, it isn't even funny. Here's a guy that has Moss potential, but his attitude and game face just did not seem to fit in with his team. His first 4 seasons with NO he seemed to be the only player with potential; of course this was with a very over-rated QB in Aaron Brooks. The past two seasons haven't been Horn's strongest, of course when he finally gets a great QB, he takes on a groin injury.

Now he's with Atlanta, which is why this is sort of a hard decision for me to make with the Vick fiasco. I am not a big Mike Vick fan, and with his usual running plays, it will for sure cut down on throws coming Horn's way; HOWEVER, being the optimistic guy that I am, I strongly believe that Horn is going to create the opening that the Falcons need on offense. Now Vick will actually have a target to throw to, and one that has the potential to make plays happen, after the catch. Horn's an emotional player, let him make one good play, and it is on like Donkey Kong.  As I said, I'm no Vick fan, but with a great veteran receiver such as Horn, this could open up the offense and really start it on the right track. Horn's the type of receiver that would make me look good if I could get the ball somewhere in his direction.

Horn is in a spot to make a fresh start, and now he wants to prove himself to his new team & fans. I think 2007 will prove to be an exciting year for Horn and the Falcon's offense, with or without Vick.

Dubz: I am not to sure on Joe Horn, something about him screams OLD to me.  So from this point forward I shall call him Old Man River.  So, Old Man River is going to be running down-field hoping the dog-killer can get the ball to him?  That is if he isn't suspended - might want to think about Joey Harrington throwing him the ball.  I say all of that to say this, I used to be a Joe Horn fan - so I can't count the guy out.  His situation isn't ideal, but I guess that creates a better story for the comeback eh?

Last but not least, we move on to the QBs capable to making a comeback this season.  There are a lot of choices out there, different teams for a lot of guys that had down years last year.  I'm picking Vick.  I think he will have a much better dog fighting season this year, than last.  *smirk*  Only kidding, I laugh to keep from crying - Vick is a joke.  Seriously, I am looking at Big Ben as my comeback QB of this season.

Tim:     BIG BEN. Man, Dubz, could you take a more conservative route? – C’mon bro, jump out there and kick the tires a little! Kidding, I am. I do agree with you; I think now that Big Ben is actually wearing a helmet and has his head firmly screwed down, he’s going to come out flailing; he knows he has to prove himself as more than the one time wonder people are whispering about. Good call, safe, but a good one none-the-less.

The QB. The supercomputer that runs the big machine out there on the field. This one is an easy pick for me. Donovan McNabb.  Talk about a winning season being due to a man. McNabb has always seemed to be one play away from greatness, or one pad away from not being hurt.

Donovan has huge potential, and I think we all caught a glimpse of this a couple of years back in Superbowl XXXIX; or at least on the road to said Superbowl. His problem has been injuries. He has been hurt for the past 3 years. He’s tough, I’ll give ‘em that, but the boy’s been hurt through all of these games.

Now is the time. This upcoming season is the time where McNabb is finally going to get through a season without being hurt. He’s done the time on rehabbing his most recent ACL tear and is ready to hit the ground running. Another “motivator”, if you will, is the surprising draft pick of Kevin Kolb, which stunned McNabb as well. Now he’s got some pressure on him to do his thing, or be moved out of the way. I have no doubt that McNabb will turn huge numbers this season from week to week. There’s nothing more motivating than knowing you will lose your job if you don’t turn up the heat. Take a look at Thomas Jones back when Chicago drafted Cedric Benson.

Spread your wings Fantasy Football Coaches, and fly high, because you know McNabb will be. Get ready to catch some major numbers on the wings of an eagle.
