What to do with the Ohio State-Michigan Loser?

By Michael Abromowitz, 11/3/06

I know I may be getting a little ahead of myself.  Both teams still have two games left but let us just assume both teams go undefeated leading up to “The Game.”  Number 1 vs. Number 2 in the greatest college football rivalry, how awesome is that!  I am more concerned about the after effect than the actual game.  What do you do with the loser?  I guess the first thing to consider is the result of the game.  If one team gets its ass smoked, then that ends the mess and the loser flies out to Pasadena (to the Rose Bowl).  But, what happens if it is a close, tight game?

Before I go any farther, the following opinions are mine.  They are what I believe, and may be not be what the pollsters believe.

I would consider this national championship a three team race:  OSU, Michigan, and Louisville.  My belief:  The Michigan-OSU will have the most impressive loss.  The loser of OSU-Michigan should be the best one-loss team in the nation (Rutgers, sorry I do not think you can climb this high).  But what about Florida?  Florida’ best win:  Tennessee, by 1 point.  Ohio State destroyed Texas, while Michigan blew out Notre Dame.  Both teams are ranked higher than Tennessee.  Timing of when you lose is the stupidest thing ever.  Florida being ranked higher than the loser of “The Game” simply because of the timing of the loss is stupid.  I guarantee 9 out of 10 pollsters believe OSU or Michigan would beat Florida.

Ok, we assume, OSU-Michigan winner goes to Glendale.  What happens if Louisville loses?  I think the loser the OSU-Michigan also should go to Glendale.  They are the best one-loss team in the nation and should go.  Stop crying Gator fans.

Now let us assume Louisville goes undefeated.  I do not think there is any guarantee that Louisville goes to the BCS Championship.  The loser of OSU-Michigan will fall below in the polls, however, a close game, could cause the loser to not fall enough and with help from the BCS, the loser could still sneak its way into the BCS Championship game.  However, it seems more realistic that Louisville will be going to the BCS Championship game.

Is Louisville better than either team?  I believe no and most experts agree.  So the question that needs to be asked:  is it fair that Louisville plays in the title game simply because the two best teams have to play each other.  I am having trouble figuring this out.  As a fan, I want to see the two best teams play each other in the national championship.  I do not want number 1 playing number 3, which I expect to happen.  Louisville’s offense is good, but it has never played against a defense like Michigan or Ohio State.   I just cannot see Louisville hanging with close either team.  The easiest way to handle this is for Louisville to lose and I think they could against Pittsburgh.  The game is at Pittsburgh too.

Florida Gator fans I hear you, I just do not think you have an argument.  If I remember correctly, you lost to FSU only to beat them in the national championship.

The BCS Title game is to showcase the two best teams.  As of now, I think the two best teams in the nation are Ohio State and Michigan.  What happens when they play each other?  Unless the game is one sided, I still think they will be the two best teams in the nation.  My opinion let them play again.  Who would not want that to happen?  Only Florida, Auburn, and Louisville fans.  The BCS would salivate over such a matchup.  The greatest rivalry playing for the National Title, could it get any sweeter?  Oh, may be Ohio State-Louisville, wait a minute that sounds like a better basketball matchup.  Louisville you are a good team, but defense wins championship.  OSU-Michigan has explosive offenses just like yours, except they also have explosive defenses.

I am out; I know I have a lot of haters now.  The easiest way to share your love is by dropping me an email.
