A Friendly Rivalry:  Virginia vs. Maryland
By Michael Abromowitz and Eric Sapperstein
10/18/07

Two friends for 364 days are the best of friends.  That one day:  the day the Virginia Cavaliers take the football field against the Maryland Terrapins.  Michael Abromowitz is an alumnus of the University of Virginia while Eric Sapperstein graduated from the University of Maryland.  On the day of “The Game” these two put their friendship aside to become bitter enemies.  Instead of competing on the field, Abromowitz and Sapp take this bitterness to where only such a bitterness can go:  trash talking.  After the game of course, the two will rekindle their friendship over a few beers, and the loser will probably make the stupid generic comment, “It’s just a game,” while the winner laughs and smiles as the loser fulfills the dreadful consequences of losing the bet.

 The Bet

If Virginia loses:  Michael will have to wear Sapp’s beloved #52 Maryland jersey and sing the Maryland fight song!

Maryland Fight Song:

Fight, fight, fight for Maryland!
Honor now her name again,
Push up the score, keep on fighting for more,
For Maryland. GO TERPS!
Go on and fight, fight, fight for Terrapin,
Keep on fighting 'til we win,
So sing out our song as we go marching along
To Victory!

If Maryland loses:  Sapp will have to wear UVA gameday attire (khakis, collared shirt, orange/blue tie) and sing the “Good Old Song.”

“The Good Old Song”:

That good old song of Wah-hoo-wah--we'll sing it o'er and o'er
It cheers our hearts and warms our blood to hear them shout and roar
We come from old Virginia, where all is bright and gay
Let's all join hands and give a yell for dear old UVa.
Wah-hoo-wah, wah-hoo-wah! Uni-v, Virginia!
Hoo-rah-ray, hoo-rah-ray, ray, ray--U-Va!

Why will Maryland win the game?
Sapperstein:  Maryland will win because they will finally shut down a team in the second half.  Maryland has played like a top 25 team in the first half of every game, but a bottom 25 team in the second half of every game.  This week they will finally play an all around good game!

Why will Virginia win the game?
Abromowitz:  UVA is on a hot streak- 6 wins in a row.  The Cavs will seek revenge from last year’s home game where they blew a 21 point lead.  Jameel Sewell was only a freshman than, he has far more experience and will get pay back as he leads his team into College Park and come out with a W.

Who will be the player of the game?
Sapperstein:  Chris Turner – Maryland QB.  Ever since he took over for Jordan Steffy (concussion) he has played very well.  He will throw all over the UVA defense and will hook up with Darrius Heyward-Bey.  Erin Henderson is another solid choice at MLB, but Turner will have the most impact on this game.

Abromowitz:  Chris “Beep” Gould.  Gould, the brother of Chicago Bears’ kicker Robbie Gould, has made clutch field goals to win the past two games for the Cavaliers.  Expect this game to come down to a field goal.  Four of the Cavaliers’ six victories have been by 5 points or less.  And in the North Carolina game, Gould went five for five on field goals.

Why is Maryland a better school than UVA?

Sapperstein:  Is this even a question?! The girls are better looking, the campus is nicer, we actually win national championships….and did I mention the girls are better looking?

Why is UVA a better school than Maryland?
Abromowitz:  Maryland students and Virginia students have one thing in common:  they both got accepted to Maryland.  Virginia is the envy of all public college schools everywhere (except those smarty pants in Berkley) when it comes to academics.  The history of the school is second to none and you can look no further than its founder, Thomas Jefferson, to know that UVA is a special place.   And Wahoo girls are not bad either, just go a football game; the girls wear sun dresses.

Best place to eat in College Park and why?
Sapperstein:  The best place to eat in College Park for sports games has to be Cornerstone.  They have flat screens all over the bar, upstairs and downstairs, and great food.  It’s especially great for Sundays during NFL season.  Every team’s game is shown and everyone can come to root for their team.

Best place to eat in Charlottesville and why?

Abromowitz:  The White Spot, home of “The Gusburger.”  When you are hungry at 3 AM nothing beats a delicious Gusburger.  A Gusburger is a cheeseburger with a fried egg on it.  If you can get by all the calories and the possibilities of having your arteries clogged, it’s a delicious treat.  Its so good, John Grisham mentioned the infamous burger in his novel The Summons.

Who would win in a fight between Testudo or Cavman and why?
Sapperstein:  Come on….TESTUDO!!  Cavman would start beating on Testudo for a while, Testudo would hide in his shell until Cavman was tired, then Testudo would get out and stomp him to death.  Please reference “College Park: The Movie” on Youtube for a demonstration of Testudo’s power!

Abromowitz:  Is this even a competition?  Cavman’s horse, Sabre, could take down Testudo himself.  All Cavman would have to do is pick up the turtle and spin him around a few times and throw him like a discus.  After throwing Testudo a few times, Cavman will prepare a feast with Sabre and the two will start off with a bowl of turtle soup.

Maryland will win the game if………………….
Sapperstein:  If they can play the second half.  They will play the first half well but they often have trouble closing out games.  If they play an entire game, no doubt…MD WINS!

Virginia will win the game if………………….
Abromowitz:  The Cavaliers’ defense creates turnovers.  The Cavaliers ride on its defense, and to beat a hot Maryland team its going to have to make plays.  UVA’s offense needs all the help on field possession and it all starts with the defense.

Maryland will lose the game if………………….
Sapperstein:  They allow UVA to stay in the game.  Maryland is a good team with a great home field advantage.  They play very well at home and UVA could be put out early.  If the Terps let them stay in the game, UVA could pull out the upset late in the game.

Virginia will lose the game if………………….
Abromowitz:  If it fails to produce a running game.  Running back Cedric Peerman started this year on a rampage, but due to injury he won’t be unable to play.  The load comes down to Andrew Pearman and Keith Payne, both with limited carries.  If the running game fails to get going, Jameel Sewell will be forced to throw the ball and depend on its receivers, which so far have been one of the weaker spots on the team.

Prediction

Sapperstein:  24-17 Terps!
Abromowitz:  24-21 Cavs!
