NFL Draft Prospect Interview: Luke Drone, QB, Illinois St.
by Michael Abromowitz, 4/17/08Luke Drone is not your normal NFL Draft prospect.  Looking at his resume it would seem Drone has a future in D.C.  Of course after football.  Just a sampling of Drone's extracurriculars outside of football: Promoted and participated in the American Red Cross Blood Drive for the past three years.
He has also been involved with the Harvest of Hope Food Drive during his time at Illinois State, helping to collect canned goods and non-perishable food items.
Helped raise $200,000 in the Bloomington-Normal community for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Actively involved in the Boys and Girls Club
Spent time building houses for underprivileged families in Juarez, Mexico.
Provided service at the Dilkon Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona

He also is a pretty good football player where he passed for 2,961 yards.  To see some of his highlights check out this video.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is your accurate height, weight and forty time?

Luke Drone:  6’ 2”, 220, 4.80

TheFootballExpert.com:  Describe your game in three words or less.

Luke Drone:  Smart, Accurate, Playmaker

TheFootballExpert.com:  What do you feel is your greatest strength as a football player and what area do you feel you need to improve in?

Luke Drone:  I feel my greatest strength is my quick release and knowledge of the game.  If for some reason things get messy in the pocket I feel I can still get the ball where it needs to be.  I don’t feel like I have a particular weakness but the NFL is bigger, faster and stronger so I will need to work hard in every aspect of my game to be at the highest possible level I can be at.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What NFL player do you do you think you compare favorably to?

Luke Drone:  I would like to think Tony Romo in my pocket awareness and playmaking and Drew Brees in savviness.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Who is the best player you have faced during your college football career?

Luke Drone:  Brent Hawkins in practice everyday, who is now a DE with the Jacksonville Jaguars.  He made the game day pass rush feel like it was in slow motion.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is your greatest football moment to date?

Luke Drone:  Upsetting the # 1 team in the nation (SIU) at their place 61-35 as a sophomore and having my best game going 23-26 passing with 3 TDs passing on a sprained AC in the throwing shoulder.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Did you have a favorite pro team growing up?  Favorite player?

Luke Drone:  Dallas Cowboys and Troy Aikman

TheFootballExpert.com:  How instrumental was Head Coach Denver Johnson in your progression?

Luke Drone:  Denver Johnson played a huge role in giving me an opportunity as a young player and having great quarterback coaches in position to teach me the X’s and O’s of the game.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What have former college teammates now in the NFL told you about preparing for the league?

Luke Drone:  Laurent Robinson, WR for the Atlanta Falcons told me that you have to bring it everyday and be ready to compete with all the other guys and just have fun while you’re doing it. Work as hard as I can leading up to the draft and get in shape, so that when camp comes around I am physically ready to do my best.

TheFootballExpert.com:  When you get your first professional paycheck what is the first thing you will buy?

Luke Drone:  I haven’t thought about my first paycheck yet, just focusing on making a team right now.

TheFootballExpert.com:  How have you been preparing for the NFL Draft?

Luke Drone:  I worked out in Chicago for a couple months with Trainers Tom and Bob Christian as well as going down to Tampa to have individual sessions with Steve DeBerg.  I lift, run and throw five days a week as well as study film to stay at the top of my game for training camp or in case teams want to work me out before the draft.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Do you have any goals in mind when it comes to the NFL Draft?

Luke Drone:  It would be great to be drafted but if not I want to make it into camp somewhere.  The main goal at the end of the day is to make a team roster in September.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is the one thing you will most miss at college?

Luke Drone:  I will miss all the friends, coaches and teammates that I have been so close to over the past five years.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Where is the best place to get a bite to eat in Bloomington, IL?

Luke Drone:  Tobins Pizza

TheFootballExpert.com:  What was your favorite college course and why?

Luke Drone:  Golf, because you got to go learn and play golf for an actual college credit.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Any pregame rituals?  Food?  Music?

Luke Drone:  No, not really, I just like to keep calm and focused on what I need to do to lead the team.  Sometimes I’ll listen to some music but other than that not really.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What is something football fans may not know about you?

Luke Drone:  I play guitar in my spare time; it’s a good way to relax.

TheFootballExpert.com:  Do you read mock drafts or listen to what draft experts have to say?

Luke Drone:  I do every once in awhile but I try not to really look at them.

TheFootballExpert.com:  What was the last good movie you saw?

Luke Drone:  Into the Wild

TheFootballExpert.com:  What do you plan to do once your playing career is over?

Luke Drone:  Coach football, whether that’s at the college level or high school level where I would also be a physical education teacher.
