Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about Free Agency. The beginning of the Free Agent Signing Period starts at midnight on February 29th. These rankings were comprised regardless of free agent status (i.e. Restricted or Unrestricted) but the status is indicated as “RFA” for “Restricted Free Agent” and “UFA” for “Unrestricted Free Agent” to the right of the player name. The definitions of each are as follows:

UFA: A Player who has at least four years experience at the expiration of a contract can sign with any team with no compensation to his former club.

RFA: Restricted free agents have three years of experience at the end of their contracts and must be tendered an offer sheet before April 15. The player's current club has seven days to match the offer, or the player's rights revert to the team that tendered the sheet. Teams are awarded compensatory draft picks based on the quantity and quality of restricted free agents it loses to other squads in the previous year's free-agent period.

Top Five Free Agent Quarterbacks

1. Derek Anderson- RFA- Anderson’s resurgent 2007 campaign has created a QB controversy in Cleveland with incumbent Brady Quinn. With a league-wide shortage in starting caliber quarterbacks, even though Anderson is a restricted free agent he will still garner plenty of interest and may seduce another team into giving up a draft pick for him.

2. Rex Grossman- UFA- His much publicized struggles aside, Grossman finds himself as the best available unrestricted quarterback on the market, meaning some team in need will undoubtedly pay him more than he is worth and give him a second chance. For as atrocious as he could be at times he was equally brilliant during others and gives teams the ultimate risk vs. reward scenario.

3. Quinn Gray- UFA- When given the chance, Gray has produced but was largely the odd man out when Jacksonville was trying to decide whether Byron Leftwich or David Garrard was the future of the franchise. In 11 games over the last three years Gray has accounted for 14 touchdowns, which speaks of his ability to produce even though he has only had four starts. Gray’s dual threat ability is reminiscent of Vince Young but with more pocket presence and poise.

4. Chris Redman- UFA- The answer to the Falcons quarterbacking woes was right under their nose the whole time. After suffering through Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich, the Falcons turned to Redman and he responded emphatically. Redman threw 2+ touchdowns in four of his five starts and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Week for Week 17.

5. Todd Collins- UFA- Collins thrived after Jason Campbell was lost for the season, leading the Redskins on a four-game winning streak and qualifying for the playoffs. Over that span, he completed 67-of-105 passes for 888 yards, five touchdowns a QB rating of 106.4. The 36 year old QB is hoping to fall into a situation like 36 year old Jeff Garcia did a year ago but may find that difficult considering his lack of production prior to this year.

Best of the Rest:
6. Shaun Hill– UFA
7. Daunte Culpepper- UFA
8. Cleo Lemon- UFA
9. Billy Volek- UFA
10.  Josh McCown- UFA
