Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about Free Agency. The beginning of the Free Agent Signing Period starts at midnight on February 29th. These rankings were comprised regardless of free agent status (i.e. Restricted or Unrestricted) but the status is indicated as “RFA” for “Restricted Free Agent” and “UFA” for “Unrestricted Free Agent” to the right of the player name. The definitions of each are as follows:

UFA: A Player who has at least four years experience at the expiration of a contract can sign with any team with no compensation to his former club.

RFA: Restricted free agents have three years of experience at the end of their contracts and must be tendered an offer sheet before April 15. The player's current club has seven days to match the offer, or the player's rights revert to the team that tendered the sheet. Teams are awarded compensatory draft picks based on the quantity and quality of restricted free agents it loses to other squads in the previous year's free-agent period.

Top Five Free Agent Wide Receivers

1. Randy Moss- UFA- Gee, do you think this guy will make any money this offseason? The most amazing thing about his record setting 23 receiving TD year is that it made everyone forget all about his horrible two years in Oakland. Belicheck and Robert Kraft don’t like to shell out dough to wide receivers, but Moss is the obvious exception to the rule. He’s not going anywhere.

2. Bernard Berrian- UFA- Berrian fell 49 yards shy of his first 1,000 yard season in 2007 but still progressed statistically as he had in each of his four years in the league. In the last two years in particular, Berrian developed into the Bears #1 wide receiver and one of the leagues premier deep threats accumulating 122 receptions, 1,726 yards and 11 touchdowns over that span.

3. DJ Hackett- UFA- When he wasn’t injured, Hackett was producing at a torrid pace. In weeks eight thru 10 when his ankle was healthy, Hackett scored three touchdowns and averaged 98 yards per game. With Deion Branch’s ACL tear expected to keep him out of training camp, the Seahawks will need the services of Hackett as much as any other team on the market.

4. Andre Davis- UFA- Davis barely made the Texans roster in 2007 and responded by leading the NFC in kick returns and returned three kickoffs for touchdowns. After Andre Johnson’s knee injury early in the year, Davis was forced into the starting lineup as a receiver where he put up career highs in yards, had 10 receptions of over 20 yards and five of over 40.

5. Jerry Porter- UFA- One of the most notorious malcontented wide receivers in the NFL, Porters on-field production during his career pales in comparison to the size of his ego. Eternally living off of the Raiders 2002 Super Bowl season in which he scored nine touchdowns, Porter had decent success this year with his most touchdowns since 2004 (6) and the highest yards per catch average of his career (16.0). It appears Al Davis’ parking spot will be safe next season.

Best of the Rest:
6. Bryant Johnson- UFA
7. Ernest Wilford- UFA
8. Jabar Gaffney- UFA
9. David Patten- UFA
10. Devery Henderson- UFA
