2009 NFL Draft - Rashad Johnson Scouting Report
by Clint Clearwater
NFL Draft Analyst

Prospect: Rashad Johnson, FS, Alabama
Ht: 5'11 Wt: 203 40: 4.49

Strengths: He has great awareness.  Can react to plays well.  He has fluid hips and great range.  Is able to get to the football fast.  Has good ball skills.  He is good in coverage.  Can do zone as well as man to man.  Does a great job of fighting off blocks.  Great football IQ.  Very coachable.  Good work ethic and a good leader of the defense.

Weaknesses: Has some off-the-field concerns.  He was arrested in February 2008 for disorderly conduct.  Not a physical safety.  Needs to improve on run support.  Not as athletic as some of the other safety prospects in this year’s draft class.  Inconsistent tackler, must work on wrapping up.  This shows poor technique.

Summary: Rashad Johnson is an extremely smart athlete.  Some say he is like a coach on the field.  This is a tremendous asset to any team.  Coaches love players who are coachable and good leaders.  Johnson is both of these.  However, he needs to improve in some important areas.  He is not an effective run stopper and he needs to get stronger to succeed in the NFL.  Fortunately, these areas can be improved with hard work and determination.  Johnson has the ability to get better, but teams will realize that he will take time to get better and that will cause him to drop a little bit on draft day.

Draft Projection: Late 2nd - early 3rd round.
