Strengths: Elite run blocker, gets into the second level a lot. He has a good motor, always looking to finish off blocks. Plays with a mean streak. Uses his hands well, good arm extension. I love seeing him get into a nice base and use his hands to keep the defenders away from his body. He shows good ability to mirror defenders, but consistency in that area could be improved. He is pretty athletic for as big of a guy he is. Pass protection is good but needs improvement. He has a good amount of experience. Great intangibles. I see a lot of potential in him.
Weaknesses: He has good quickness and footwork, but I could see him struggling a bit against quick and strong defenders. He can mirror the defenders but he often looks off balance against very fast pass rushers. Veteran defensive linemen will take full advantage of that. He needs to get stronger; he struggles against the bull rush at times. He needs to be more consistent overall.
Summary: Bottom line, Jonathan Martin has potential to be a top LT in the NFL. His biggest strength is his run blocking. He will be a powerful force in the running game immediately. His biggest weakness is his consistency. I've seen too much bad tape where he either loses his balance against a speed rush or is simply ran over with a bull rush. However, overall I see an offensive tackle who has a lot of experience and a lot of potential.
