2009 NFL Draft - Day 2 BPA
by Gregory Cox
NFL Draft Director
4/26/09

Who got overlooked on the first day of the draft? Usually we would be talking about roughly 100 players already off the board. Under the new format only 64 players went on the first day meaning a lot of quality talent is still available. Using the consensus opinion, average draft position from my compilation of mocks, let’s look at some of it.

The # reflects the average placement and is followed by the number of mocks the player was listed in (out of 105 in my spreadsheet). I rank by average divided by number of mocks. These are the Top 25 available according to the consensus.

DE/LB Michael Johnson (Georgia Tech) - #34.51, 94 mocks: Freakish ability, but invisible on tape. There was talk of him as a first round pick before the season. He never played up to the potential given his size.

CB/KR D.J. Moore (Vanderbilt) - #44.80, 94 mocks: Given the generally weak class at cornerback it is not much of a surprise to see him slip down a bit.

OG Duke Robinson (Oklahoma) - #49.66, 85 mocks: His poor showing in the BCS game apparently turned a few teams off. As Michael Abromowitz pointed out, because Levitre is really a tackle there are still no true guards off the board making this only a slight surprise.

TE Jared Cook (South Carolina) - #52.49, 71 mocks: We are going to see some action at the tight end position early on day 2. The one sure thing was Pettigrew going early, and the surprise was that Quinn was the only other day 1 selection.

T/G Jamon Meredith (South Carolina) - #53.65, 71 mocks: Versatile linemen will be very much in demand as the rounds wear off and he should not have to wait too long.

DL Jarron Gilbert (San Jose State) - #48.53, 64 mocks: Six of the expected guys went off the board at defensive tackle and it was just a numbers game keeping him waiting by the phone. It will just take a team expecting him to fit into their system.

FS Rashad Johnson (Alabama) – #61.85, 67 mocks: In what has been considered a weak safety class four went on the first day, all in the second round. McBath was the only one of the group who was not projected in the 46-55 range on average. Johnson is the most recognizable safety on the board by far.

RB Shonn Greene (Iowa) – #67.00, 69 mocks: There is still incredible value at the running back position as evidenced by Greene still being on the board. It’s not often a guy goes 100+ every game at the BCS level and he could produce right away in a complementary role.

WR Juaquin Iglesias (Oklahoma) – #62.85, 62 mocks: Teams panicked a bit at receiver when the price tag for available NFL talent (Boldin, Edwards) was too steep. The result was six receivers in the first round and another, Robiskie, close at #36. A few guys could draw attention early on Sunday including Iglesias.

CB Victor Harris (Virginia Tech) – #71.16, 67 mocks: He was hyped up a lot early in the process and died down quite a bit after a poor Senior Bowl showing. It’s debatable if he goes off the board in round 3.

WR Derrick Williams (Penn State) – #66.41, 59 mocks

TE Shawn Nelson (Southern Miss) – #61.24, 54 mocks

CB Mike Mickens (Cincinnati) – #72.70, 56 mocks

ILB Darry Beckwith (LSU) – #68.02, 52 mocks: In a thin middle linebacker class teams who have yet to fill their need will not wait around to pull the trigger on him.

OLB Marcus Freeman (Ohio State) – #69.67, 52 mocks: He didn’t draw the hype of Curry, the USC trio or even his teammate Laurinaitis, but Freeman is a solid prospect who should land in the middle of the third round.

DE/LB Lawrence Sidbury (Richmond) – #63.37, 46 mocks: There was day 1 buzz surrounding him, but Veikune and Brown beat him off the board unexpectedly. As teams regroup he should have a short wait.

OT Troy Kropog (Tulane) – #74.46, 52 mocks

WR Louis Murphy (Florida) – #72.88, 50 mocks

OG Herman Johnson (LSU) – #78.88, 52 mocks

RB Andre Brown (N.C. State) - #72.91, 43 mocks

TE James Casey (Rice) – #77.29, 45 mocks

CB Coye Francies (San Jose State) – #85.69, 49 mocks

TE Chase Coffman (Missouri) – #87.78, 49 mocks

OC Jonathan Luigs (Arkansas) – #84.72, 46 mocks

DL Alex Magee (Purdue) – #77.73, 41 mocks
